Queens Street Renamed For Fallen Officer Dennis Guerra

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One of New York's Finest was honored at a street renaming ceremony in Queens after losing his life in a fire last year.

NYPD Detective Dennis Guerra died from smoke inhalation three days after he responded to a fire in April 2014 at the Coney Island Houses.

"Detective Dennis Guerra Way" was unveiled in front of his family's home at Granada Place and Faber Terrace in Far Rockaway at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It was an emotional moment as Guerra's widow spoke lovingly about her late husband, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

"Dennis was a humble, loving, and caring person that always tried to do what was right," Cathy Guerra said. "He came a long way in this short life, always pushing for better."

Police Commissioner William Bratton and other city officials were in attendance.

"Dennis was a hero, there's no other way to describe his commitment to the city," Bratton said, adding Guerra "ran toward the danger, as we would expect."

Guerra's partner, Officer Rosa Rodriguez, was seriously hurt, and is still recovering from her injuries, Bratton said.
