Police: Off-Duty Officer Shoots Stabbing Suspect Outside Upper West Side Duane Reade
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A violent incident Friday at an Upper West Side pharmacy ended with a shooting involving an off-duty police officer.
Police said it started around 7 a.m. when an altercation between two men got heated at the Duane Reade on Broadway and West 94th Street and ended with one man stabbing the other's arm, CBS2's Thalia Perez reported.
The off-duty officer was working security at the store.
Surveillance video captured the officer chasing the suspect on Amsterdam Avenue. According to police, he ordered to the man to drop his weapon, but the 42-year-old suspect refused and the officer opened fire.
"I heard gunshots. I think three," Emily Shalant said. "They've been doing construction here, so I assumed it was when the trucks pick up the metal plates."
Police taped off the area on Amsterdam Avenue for hours and were collecting shell casings and other evidence at the scene.
Police also released a photo of the knife.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect and victim knew each other.
Neighbors said it's time for change.
"It's terrible. We have to fix this," Lucy Hernandez said.
"I've been a superintendent for more than 15 years here in this area, but it was never like that before," Jose Ibarra said.
The 66-year-old stabbing victim and the suspect, who was shot in the stomach, were rushed to the hospital. Both were in stable condition and expected to survive.
