It happened early Friday morning at Paddy's Place on Rosemont Avenue in Union Township.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office said the preliminary investigation shows the officer, who has not been identified, got into some sort of altercation with 37-year-old Michael Gaffney of Piscataway.

At some point during the incident, authorities said the officer used his service weapon.

Gaffney was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
