Students Donate Hundreds Of Coats To Those In Need Through 1010 WINS-Bioheat Van For Warmth Drive

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mother Nature may have taken her time in bringing winter to New York this season, but the temperatures have since dropped, leaving many in need of coats out in the cold.

On Friday, 1010 WINS received a huge boost to its second annual coat drive from some students on Long Island.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, the word was out about the 1010 WINS-Bioheat Van For Warmth coat drive and students at Oceanside Middle School really got into it.

Hundreds of coats were collected by the Builders' Club and stuffed into the Bioheat van.

Club member Olivia Mitchell, 13, said this is the time to donate.

"I think about with the snow, like people who are very cold and who are homeless, you could give a coat to them. They could die of hypothermia," she said.

DJ Toro with sister station 92.3 AMP, a partner in the coat drive, said the students really understand the value of giving.

"They were really impacted by Sandy and they really felt other people helping them, so they wanted to keep that going," he said.

The coat drive is accepting gently used coats in all sizes. The coats will be donated to a local city agency to be distributed to those in need.
