Oceanside Man Accused Of Robbing Bank Near His Home -- Twice
OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man is charged with robbing his neighborhood bank twice in eight days.
Police said 34-year-old Melvin Olivo robbed the TD Bank on Long Beach Road in Oceanside on Feb. 19 and again on Feb. 27.
The bank is located just steps from Olivo's home, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
"Crime of opportunity; probably saw the bank and figured that this one would be the one because it is within close proximity. It didn't really work very well for him." said Det. Lt. Richard Lebrun.
Both times, police said Olivo never had a weapon, but showed the teller a note demanding cash and left with an unspecified amount of money, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.
Lebrun admitted it was a bit unusual "that somebody within close proximity -- within a tenth of a mile -- does rob a bank."
There were eight employees and one customer inside the bank during the holdup on Feb. 27. No one was injured in either robbery.
