NYU, Graduate Assistants' Union Reach Tentative Agreement
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York University's administration has reached a tentative deal with a union representing graduate assistants.
The school and the Graduate Students Organizing Committee, which is part of the United Auto Workers Local 2110, reached the agreement on Monday evening, averting a possible strike.
If ratified, it would be the first contract for the only union in the country recognized by a private university, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
The union represents more than 1,200 graduate student workers at NYU, and complained that the university had not offered pay raises or health coverage for students working for as little as $10 to attend the pricey university.
The school said it was offering an unprecedented deal to add benefits, expand medical coverage, and provide retroactive raises, DNAinfo reported Monday.
