NYS To Fund Major Water, Sewage Projects On Long Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the state will spend nearly half a billion dollars on Long Island for water and sewage projects, including $383 million to help get homes in Suffolk County hooked up to sewers.
"Sewering in Suffolk, we have talked about for decades," the governor said. "And yes, it's an expensive proposition and it is a big project, but it's something that we have to do."
As 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported, in the first phase of the project, 10,000 homes near environmentally sensitive areas will be hooked up to sewers.
The governor also announced $97 million in funding for the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in Nassau County that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
The Bay Park project would build a pipe to take sewage 2 miles off shore, instead of dumping it in the bay, Rivera reported.
"We are not going to stop until we get the outflow pipe for Bay Park because it is ludicrous to be dumping the treated sewage right there on the coast," Cuomo said.
There is also $2 million in funding set aside to create a new center for clean water technology to be based at Stony Brook University in Suffolk.
