NYPD Stats: NYC Murder Rate Down 14 Percent In 2014

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – For such a large city, murder rates in New York City are quite low.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, there were 328 murders in 2014, seven fewer than the previous year. By contrast, Chicago—a city with a much smaller population—had 392 murders.

But it's not just murders that have dropped, D'Auria reported. NYPD statistics show robberies in all categories also dropped by about 14 percent in 2014.

The dramatic decrease in murders comes alongside an immense drop in police stop-and-frisks.

Police officials are quoted as saying the drop is due in part to the police focusing on the relatively small number of criminals who commit the majority of offenses.
