NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a man who they said tried to rape a 41-year-old woman in central Harlem earlier this week.

The victim was sitting on the steps outside a residential building when the suspect began talking to her around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

When she went inside the building, police said the suspect followed her in and attempted to rape her.

The woman was able to fight off the attacker who then fled the scene, police said.

The suspect is described by police as a black man in his 20s, about 5'10" tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a green shirt with the number 4 on it.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
