Hero Cops Save Unconscious Baby In Jamaica, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two of New York's finest are being credited with saving the life of a baby boy in Queens Saturday afternoon.

"It was a really scary situation," family friend Mercedes Miranda said. Speaking through a translator, Alfredo Aona described the moment his son fell unconscious inside their home. Every attempt to revive him was unsuccessful.

In a twist of fate, one father's grief clashed with another's duty. Officers John Simicich and Timothy Molinet were on patrol nearby when they saw a call about an unconscious infant come across their police computer. They immediately rerouted to the scene.

"We saw the parents were scared, we saw the child was unconscious. He wasn't breathing, his lips were discolored," Officer Simicich said. "You jump into a mode where you have to react. We decided we had to take the baby."

Instead of waiting for an ambulance, Simicich and Molinet grabbed the child and raced to Jamaica Hospital. They performed CPR along the way.

Officer Simicich says Joseph regained consciousness and started crying when they arrived at the hospital's ambulance bay.

"It feels good," he said. "It feels like we know what we're doing and our training helped and we acted properly."

It was unclear what caused Joseph to lose consciousness, but he was back home in his father's arms Sunday thanks to the two heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty.
