NYPD Officer Suffering From Lupus Promoted To Detective

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton on Friday promoted dozens of officers to higher ranks – including a newly-minted detective who was lauded for his work ethic even though he is battling lupus.

Officer Haydn Chacana of the Crime Scene Unit was promoted to detective at a promotion ceremony at One Police Plaza on Friday.

Chacana has been diagnosed with systemic lupus, but "continues to have an impeccable attendance record and he is known for his professionalism, determined work ethic, attention to detail, and his positive attitude."

Also promoted Friday morning were Michael Sachelari to director of the cardiovascular fitness program, and Margaret Alexa Samarotto to director of the employment section.

A total of 57 officers were also promoted to sergeant, three detectives to second-grade detective, and 40 officers to detective.
