NYPD Officer Injured In 1981 Violent Shooting Laid To Rest
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A funeral service was held Saturday for a retired NYPD officer injured years ago in a violent shooting.
Police officers carried the flag-draped coffin of Richard Rainey into Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Queens.
Rainey was shot 14 times while responding to a burglary in St. Albans, Queens in 1981.
He retired after the shooting and it has not been determined if the shooting contributed to his death.
"Greatest guy you ever want to meet. It's a shame, it should never have happened to anybody," one friend told CBS2.
His partner, officer John Scarangella, died after being gunned down by members of a Black Panther splinter group.
It's believed Joanne Chesimard, who was convicted of killed a New Jersey state trooper, was there during the shooting. She was granted asylum in Cuba.
