NYPD Officer Injured After Running Into Burning Long Island Home

WHEATLEY HEIGHTS (N.Y.) -- An NYPD officer was injured responding to a fire on Long Island early Wednesday morning.

Two officers were driving home an NYPD surgeon who had just finished treating an NYPD detective who was shot during a drug bust in Brooklyn, when they noticed a house on fire on Ridge Road in Suffolk County, CBS2 reported.

According to officials, the officers ran into the building at 146 Ridge Road to make sure everyone was out of the burning home.

No one was was in the house at the time of the fire, but the officers did manage to rescue several pets. One pet died in the fire, officials said.

One officer is being treated for smoke inhalation, according to officials.

The arson squad is investigating the incident, officials said.
