NYPD Increases Holiday Pedestrian Safety Patrols Near Senior Centers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Police Department will be stepping up traffic safety patrols around senior centers to help provide extra protection for pedestrians during the busy holiday season.
The holiday initiative began on Monday, Dec. 14 and will run through Dec. 20, the NYPD said.
Police said the focus will be enforcing 'Vision Zero' moving violations, a program created by Bill de Blasio targeting traffic offenses like speeding, distracted driving and failure to yield to pedestrians.
More focus has been placed on Vision Zero violations after an 88-year-old woman was fatally hit by a taxi driver while crossing the street on the Upper West Side in early November. A 68-year-old man was fatally struck in Queens less than 12 hours earlier.
The NYPD said enforcement for their holiday initiative will be concentrated during busy travel hours.
