NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton: MTA Should Install Cameras On New Subway Cars
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With the Metropolitan Transportation Authority ordering up 1,000 new subway cars, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said he plans to speak to agency officials to try to convince them to equip each car with security cameras.
"Think about it: You have a 10-car train. A conductor in between stations is effectively able to monitor cameras that would be on the subway to watch those 10 cars," Bratton told reporters, including WCBS 880's Rich Lamb. "If there was an issue occurring, he could radio ahead. We could have our police there to meet the train coming in."
Bratton said, with subway announcements and signage now automated, the conductor would have time to monitor TV screens between stops.
Many of the city's buses already have cameras.
The MTA told CBS 2 this week that it is "studying the possibility of installing surveillance cameras in future subway car models," but admitted it "would be a difficult technical challenge."
