NYPD: Brooklyn Man Charged With Impersonating Police Officer And Rape
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn man was arrested Wednesday on charges of rape and impersonating a police officer in connection with an incident last month, according to the NYPD.
An 18-year-old woman was walking to buy cigarettes on Gates Avenue and Broadway in Bushwick on Oct. 2 when Walter Barnes, 47, pulled up in a brown 2010 Lexus and offered to give her a ride, police said.
Once the woman was inside the vehicle, he pulled out a handheld radio and spoke into it, using words that made the victim believe that he was a police officer speaking to his colleagues, the NYPD said.
Barnes repeatedly threatened to arrest the woman if she didn't submit to sex acts, police said.
The woman was sexually assaulted several times before she managed to escape and run to a building for help, police said.
Police were able to track down Barnes thanks to the woman's recollection of some of the numbers on his Georgia license plate, which is PVT8980, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
Barnes has a record of prior arrests involving rapes and robberies, and police are asking any other potential victims to contact the NYPD, Papa reported.
