NYPD: 1 Dead In Williamsburg Triple Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A botched home invasion in Brooklyn turned into a deadly triple shooting Thursday.

NYPD investigators spent Thursday evening inside a Williamsburg apartment building on Broadway near Bartlett Street. Police were initially called there around 3:15 p.m. for reports of three people shot inside.

"My grandma was upstairs by herself when this happened," neighbor Yamilet Martinez told CBS2's Ali Bauman. "She said she heard the gunshots and she was scared, so she just went to my room."

Authorities say a man was trying to break into one of the apartments. He had a gun, and so did the two people who live there.

"They were newcomers. They had just moved in," neighbor Maria Rivera said.

Police say there was some sort of dispute between the apparent intruder and the two residents, then shots were fired outside the apartment door.

It's unclear who opened fire first, but the intruder was shot in the face and died in the hallway.

The 36-year-old man who lives in the apartment was shot in the torso and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the 29-year-old woman who lives with him was shot in the arm.

"Nothing like this happens around my community, so it's weird and shocking," Martinez said.

New NYPD data shows crime went up 22% citywide last month compared to May 2020 with a 46.7% increase in robberies and a 73% increase in shootings.

"It's a wake-up call ... You see we leave windows open on the fire escape and stuff. Now you gotta be careful who comes into the building," Rivera said.

Investigators were still on the scene Thursday night trying to figure out the sequence of events.

Police have not yet identified the person who died. We're told the two residents are both expected to survive.
