NYC's Sanitation Department Looks For Help Clearing Snow, Ice
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Want to make some money?
The city's Department of Sanitation has put out a call for "snow laborers" to help remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and step streets.
The first call went out to a list of pre-registered laborers to get to work Thursday morning.
"I'm a father of six and it's kind of rough so I gotta do what I have to do," said Louise Borges who was chipping away at the ice at Delancey and Chrystie streets.
"I needed a job so that's why I'm out here," said snow laborer Austin Jones. "It's an honest day's work."
Anyone interested in becoming a snow laborer can register at their local sanitation garage between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Find your local garage here.
The pay starts at $12 per hour and jumps to $18 after the first 40 hours.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, eligible to work in the United States and capable of performing heavy physical labor.
"You don't have to be a guy or have muscles all you have to do is have determination and the will to do a good job," one snow laborer, named Carolyn, said.
