NYCHA Launches 'Fix It Forward' Initiative To Speed Up Repairs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Housing Authority is trying to learn from its mistakes.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, for residents of New York City public housing, the reflection on how the agency is performing can be answered with one question: When something breaks, how long does it take to fix it?

NYCHA General Manager Michael Kelly, who just completed his first 100 days on the job, said in the past the agency started to lose its core business as a property manager, so it is rolling out a new repair strategy called "Fix It Forward."

"What we're really looking at doing is just a series of really common sense changes around how we do our maintenance and repair operations that we think will modernize sort of our outdated procedures," Kelly said.

The agency will implement changes such as giving more control to local building managers and streamlining the process for larger projects, all in an effort to cut down on repair times.
