Officials: NYC Unemployment At Lowest Level Since 2008
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City has added more than 91,000 jobs in the past year, and the unemployment rate moved slightly lower in August to 5.4 percent.
As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen said the unemployment figure is down 2.7 percent since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in August.
"That's a huge drop. It's obviously great for our economy. It's great for the people of New York," she said.
Glen added that the good news is not just with job numbers. She said the city has had a greater increased in wages over the past year than any other major city in the U.S.
"We know what the future looks like," she said. "We're making investments in it, and sectors are following."
Glen said the last time the city saw unemployment this low was in 2008 – and unemployment has now rebounded fully from the financial crisis.
