NYC Teacher Killed In Oklahoma Crash While Biking Across Country

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York City high school teacher was killed while biking across the country Thursday.

Police said Patrick Wanninkhof was struck and killed on an Oklahoma highway by a car whose driver acknowledged looking at her cellphone at the time of the accident.

Another bicyclist was also injured in the crash, The Oklahoman reported.

Wanninkhof, 25, was biking with other cyclists to raise money for affordable housing through the nonprofit organization Bike & Build.

Depending on the investigation into the nature of her distracted driving, the driver could face charges.

"They drew blood on the driver, and they'll wait until the report comes back on that and they've finished up the investigation to present it to the DA's office, and she'll present any possible charges,'' Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. John Vincent said.

Wanninkhof was a teacher at Fordham High School for the Arts in The Bronx. He was placed there for the last three years through the Teach for America program.
