NYC Puts Contingency Plans In Place In Case Of School Bus Strike
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City is putting contingency plans in place as two school bus companies threaten to go on strike.
Teamsters Local 553 union members at Jofaz Transportation and Y& M Transit voted to authorize the strike on Tuesday.
The two bus companies serve parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
The strike would affect 12,000 public school students and about 2,500 private school students.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said there's a high likelihood that the issue could be resolved Monday.
"We are very hopeful of reaching a resolution in time to keep the school buses running and not disrupt our kids getting to school," the mayor said.
De Blasio said in the event of a strike, the city would offer free Metro cards or reimbursements for car transportation to affected families.
