NYC Police Union, Taxi Cab Group To Work On Improving Ties

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York City police union and a taxi group are joining forces in a unique way.

As WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported, it is hoped that the two can learn from each other while improving what legend has is not the warmest of friendships.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association said it is open to partnerships with other New York businesses, but it's starting with training with the taxi industry workforce.

"We're probably two of the most visible scenes in New York City," said Sergeants Benevolent Association's Ed Mullins.

Mullins said they can offer sound advice on dealing with violent passengers and random New York City road rage.

Ehtan Gerber, with the trade group Greater New York Taxi Association, said it's a natural partnership.

"We see the best and we see the worst of New York and we have tense situations and we have difficult situations," he said.

It's described as a bridge-building kind of situation, since the relationship between the cabbie and the cop is not exactly the happiest of New York stories, Murnane reported.
