NYC Official: You Better Watch Out For Scams While Shopping For The Holidays

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Not everyone is jolly this holiday season, so watch out for the Grinch.

New York City Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin is warning that shoppers should be on alert for holiday scams, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

"Watch the prices that they are paying for items; make sure that the receipt reflects that price accurately," Menin advised.

Menin said scammers can be more active during the holiday shopping season.

"It's a very busy time of year, obviously for shopping, and unfortunately some people try to take advantage of people," she said.

Menin also suggested that shoppers keep a watchful eye on their own bottom line. Set a budget and use smartphone apps and social media to compare prices and get the best deals, she said.

She also advised to be on the lookout for phone scams and product recalls.
