NYC Man Found With Hatchet, Knife, Brass Knuckles At LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A New York City man faces weapons charges after a hatchet, knife and brass knuckles were found in his carry-on bag Thursday morning, authorities said.

The man was arrested as he was passing through a checkpoint at LaGuardia airport. The items were spotted by a Transportation Security Administration officer manning an X-ray machine.

"When asked about the items, he said that he uses them for self defense and for camping," TSA Spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein told 1010 WINS. "I don't know exactly which of the two he was thinking about when he was in LaGuardia."

Passengers who are unsure of what they can bring aboard a plane in either their carry-on or checked luggage are urged to download either the "myTSA app" or to check out the TSA website. There's a section on the site called "Can I bring my _____?" which will let passengers know what they can or can't carry.

TSA agents screen approximately 1.8 million passengers each day, the agency said.
