NYC Library Officials Call For Repairs To Dilapidated Conditions

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New York City's libraries are in shambles and many people want more done, according to library officials.

The leaders of the city's three public library systems call it a staggering infrastructure crisis, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"We have places where the heating and air conditioning is failing, where there are leaky roofs. We have got librarians running programs using garbage cans as tarps," Tony Marx said, president of the New York Public Library.

Marx points to a study released by the Center for Urban Future estimating the price tag to fix them at $1 billion.

"We did not ask for the moon, we asked for a reasonable amount to get the job done," he said.

Marx said New Yorkers deserve better.
