NYC Food Truck Lunch: Torta Cubana From Tacos Mi Mexico

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Broadway between 55th & 56th St can be a food truck paradise, especially on Fridays, when there are 5 or 6 food trucks parked there. With all the food trucks on that block, you might not notice a small Mexican food cart called Tacos Mi Mexico on the NW corner of 55th & Broadway. We did, and checked it out.

There seem to be tons of places to get tacos now, so even though tacos are in their name, we decided to order a sandwich from the menu. We ordered a Torta Cubana (Cuban sandwich), which cost $8.

After waiting a few minutes while the sandwich was being assembled, we picked up our order and headed back to the office. The first thing that was apparent was how heavy the bag was for just having a sandwich inside.

Opening the wrapper back at our desk, we saw shredded roast pork, lettuce, tomato, cheese, guacamole and jalapeños. In addition to all these ingredients, refried beans were slathered on top of bread like a condiment, and there was mayo on the bottom of the sandwich, and in the middle.

You might ask what this sandwich has in common with a traditional Cuban sandwich. The answer is "not much." Roast pork was about the extent of it, but there were other redeeming qualities.

There was no mustard or pickle included, and instead of ham, there was a split, grilled frankfurter in the middle of the sandwich. Kind of strange, but interesting.

The roast pork had a nice flavor, as did the refried beans and guacamole. With all these ingredients on a large kaiser roll, we were full for the rest of the day, and into the evening.

Tacos Mi Mexico doesn't appear to have a social media presence, but they don't need one, with all the foot traffic on that block during the week.

If you're looking for an all-in-one Mexican sandwich, the Torta Cubana fits the bill, although the name is a bit of a misnomer. This is more like a Torta Mexicana.

Whatever the name, it's a large, tasty, filling sandwich that's perfect for large appetites.
