NYC Officials Need To Prioritize Buses If They Want To Increase Ridership, Advocate Says

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If New York City officials want more people to ride buses, then the bus system has to be a top priority, advocates said.

Tabitha Decker of the Transit Center said to reverse the decline in ridership, city buses have to run more frequently and more efficiently.

"New York should utilize modern technology to allow riders to tap and go and board the bus through all doors," she said.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, it's all part of what she calls the Bus Turn Around campaign. She believes buses have to be given priority on the streets.

"The city should create additional bus lanes, and the state should allow for additional cameras to enforce those lanes," she said.

Decker said city buses travel at 7-mph on a typical weekday.
