NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New York City  has awarded $9 million to two men who were freed after wrongful convictions.

As WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported, it's been five years since the double murder convictions of Danny Colon and Anthony Ortiz were overturned by the state's court of appeals.

The court found that the key witness in the case, who was facing drug charges, and the prosecutor made untrue statements about the degree of help the Manhattan District Attorney's Office gave to the witness in return for testimony.

Attorney Joel Rudin, representing Colon and Ortiz, said the tactics used by detectives and prosecutors during those years were not limited to Brooklyn and that the same tactics were used in Manhattan.

Ortiz said he is "elated" it is all behind him and can now get on with his life, Cornell reported.
