The Rose Main Reading Room and The Bill Blass Public Catalog Room will open on Oct. 5.

The adjacent historic rooms were closed in May 2014 when a 16-inch plaster rosette dropped from the reading room's ornate ceiling. That prompted an inspection of the catalog room. Its century-old ceiling mural was found to have extensive damage.

The Beaux Arts-style library, officially known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, is offering a free exhibition that documents the restoration and other recent preservation work at the landmark building. "Preserving a Masterpiece: From Soaring Ceilings to Subterranean Storage'' runs through Oct. 9.
