NY Medical Examiner's Office To Hold 'Missing Persons Day' Saturday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the New York Medical Examiner's Office is holding "Missing Persons Day."
The event will take place at the 26th Street and First Avenue location.
"We look every day for these individuals," Mark Desire said, a forensic scientist and DNA expert with the ME's office.
More than 1,200 people who died in New York City since 1990 are still unidentified, WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported.
"In order to identify them, we need help from family members," Desire said.
He says the purpose of the day is to help people looking for somone.
"If mom and dad, or brothers and sisters, or children or really anyone biologically related to that missing loved one-- if they come, we can take a DNA sample from them there," he said.
Desire says even a comb or toothbrush from the missing person can produce a sample.
The event will also help those with missing loved ones not in the state of New York.
