NUTLEY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Nutley, New Jersey were searching for a brazen burglar Thursday night, after two homes and nine cars were broken into over several hours.

The most shocking crime happened on Hay Avenue in Nutley Monday night. Police said a thief raided a home while a husband and wife were sleeping.

"They ransacked the entire first floor and then made their way to the second floor, and burglarized the room immediately next to them to where the occupants were sleeping," said Nutley police Detective Sgt. Anthony Montanari. "They never heard anything."

The suspect also stole the family's 2010 Toyoa Prius, which police later found in Newark.

Investigators believe the same suspect raided nine cars on Hay Avenue, Burnett Place, Grant Avenue, Washington Avenue -- stealing everything from money to a laptop. The suspect also tried to break into a house on Durant Place, police said.
