Officials: Westchester County Nun Dies In Head-On Collision On Route 6

SOMERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A nun who worked at a Catholic high school in Westchester County has died and another is in intensive care after a crash in Yorktown on Friday night, according to school officials.

Sister Barbara Heil, 80, died shortly after being involved in a head-on collision on Route 6 in Yorktown on Friday night, officials said. Heil worked at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers.

Father Mark Vaillancourt said students, faculty and parents are devastated by the loss, CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported.

Sister Marie Murphy, who also works at the school, was also in the car at the time of the accident. According to officials, Marie is currently in intensive care.

"This is truly a great loss to Kennedy Catholic and to our community as a whole," school officials said in a statement. "She will be profoundly missed by everyone whose lives she touched."

Investigators said 48-year-old Christina Deagan was traveling westbound on when her vehicle entered the eastbound lane for unknown reasons. Deagan's vehicle then struck Heil's Honda head-on.

According to John F. Kennedy Catholic officials, Heil worked with the school since its opening in 1967 and led several school programs, along with teaching Latin.

"They're devastated very much, she was just so involved in everything she did," Dawn Tinger, a Kennedy Catholic High School parent, told CBS2. "It's a tragedy that she's gone from the school."
