'Not In My Hood' March In Brooklyn Spreads Message Of Non-Violence

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The fifth annual "Not In My Hood" march was held through the streets of East Flatbush Saturday to spread the message of non-violence.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams said police are important partners in keeping people safe, but communities are too dependent on them.

"We do not want to live in a society where the only way we feel safe is if there's 5 or 6 officers on every block," Williams said. "We want to make sure we are funding programs that are dealing with structural issues that have been going on in these communities for generations."

Saturday's march also kicks off Gun Violence Awareness month.
