Norwalk Bridge Replacement Heads Toward Design Phase

NORWALK, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – Gov. Dan Malloy provided an update on one of the largest transportation issues facing Connecticut-- replacing the walk railroad bridge in Norwalk.

This 119-year-old bridge over the Norwalk Harbor will in time be replaced by one with all the modern amenities, WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Jim Redeker said the new span will actually be two bridges which can rise to accommodate passing marine traffic below.

"The first thing we're going to do is do some designs and pick some options. We want to replace this type of bridge, we would never want to put in place another swing bridge with four tracks because it becomes a single point of failure for the railroad," he said.

Currently, the bridge is headed for the design phase. Construction is next but the bridge may not be open to train traffic until 2020.
