North Shore-LIJ Hospital Shows Off New Helicopter

MANHASSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A Long Island hospital now has a faster way to transport critically ill patients.

North Shore-LIJ showed off its brand new helicopter that will be based at its Manhasset hospital.

The flying ambulance will have life-saving medical equipment for patients in severe trauma.

Hospital officials say it can get patients to the emergency room more quickly than an ambulance.

"In typical Long Island traffic, it can be 40 minutes, an hour or more depending on the time of day. With this helicopter, we can get that down to 16-17 minutes," Gene Tangney said, regional executive director of North Shore-LIJ's Central Region.

The new chopper will be shared with Connecticut's Yale-New Haven hospital.
