No Verdict Yet In Salt-Poisoning Case Against Mother
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Jurors considering murder and manslaughter charges against a woman accused of poisoning her son with salt have completed their first full day of deliberations without reaching a verdict.
They will reconvene Monday.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the judge gave the jury strict instructions not to research anything regarding the case over the weekend.
Prosecutors say 27-year-old Lacey Spears force-fed sodium to her 5-year-old son Garnett-Paul though a feeding tube in his stomach, killing him. Jurors took a second look Friday at video that showed the Scottsville, Kentucky, woman taking her son into a hospital bathroom with a connector tube. The boy appeared to suffer afterward.
The jurors also asked to hear the definition of "depraved indifference,'' a key element of the murder charge.
Prosecutors say Spears craved sympathy from family, friends and doctors.
Her defense portrayed Spears as a doting mother, reminding jurors no one saw her do anything wrong.
