Service Back After Disabled NJ TRANSIT Train Causes Penn Station Delays

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A disabled NJ TRANSIT train caused major delays in and out of Penn Station Thursday morning.

NJ TRANSIT says riders faced up to 90 minute delays earlier, but just before noon, lines were operating on or close to schedule with residual delays.

It all started just before 8:45 a.m. as passengers on train 3712 were at a standstill when the train became disabled, stuck in the tunnel at Penn Station.

Regular passengers were frustrated, taking photos on a dark train with no air for nearly 100 minutes. NJ TRANSIT said by about 10 a.m., the train made its way into Penn under its own power.

Passengers who say they're used to problems and delays sounded off on Twitter.

Other passengers said this is a first time occurrence for them as they don't take the train often. And for that, they are thankful.

"What I'd like to see is the mobile app they have for your phone, it would be very helpful for me to have the updates, be updated in real-time so I can compensate for the time lost by going out and accomplishing things instead of waiting here," passenger Matt Szczerbenski told CBS2's Erin Logan. "I'm dependent upon these monitors. If I had it on my phone, I could be smarter about how I spent my time."

PATH was accepting NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street.
