NJ Police Officer Accused Of Letting K-9 Bite Woman In Custody

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A Tuckerton Borough, N.J. police officer faces charges for allegedly allowing his K-9 to attack a woman in custody.

The victim, a 57-year-old woman, allegedly refused to stop her vehicle after police flashed their lights at her while driving in Tuckerton back in January, prosecutors said.

Tuckerton Borough Police Cpl. Justin Cherry followed her to Barnegat, where she was taken into custody by Barnegat police, according to prosecutors. While she was being held in custody in the parking lot of the Barnegat Township Municipal Complex, Cherry allegedly allowed his police dog to attack her, prosecutors said.

Cherry then allegedly falsified his police report in an attempt to cover up or explain the attack, prosecutors said.

Cherry faces charges of official misconduct and aggravated assault.

He was released after posting $15,000 bail.
