MILFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man has died after falling out of a canoe on Long Island Sound near Connecticut.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection identified the boater as 24-year-old Jeffrey Young, of North Caldwell, N.J. He was pulled from the water unconscious and without a pulse Saturday. He died at Milford Hospital.

An unidentified woman also was taken to Milford Hospital and was treated for hypothermia and released.

The Coast Guard dispatched a boat and helicopter from Cape Cod and Stratford fire crews participated.

Milford Fire Capt. Gregory Carman said Young and the woman were not wearing life jackets.

With gusty winds, a small-craft advisory was posted in the area when the canoe overturned.
