NJ Lawmakers Call For Gov. Chris Christie To Spend On Bridges, Roads

EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Some New Jersey lawmakers gathered on a rusted bridge Wednesday to call for Gov. Chris Christie to dedicate funding to the city's crumbling infrastructure.

The politicians want Christie to put money into the drained-out Transportation Trust Fund, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

The lawmakers held a news conference on the Park Avenue Bridge in Edison overlooking train tracks.

"If you look at the bridge here today, you can see that there's holes in the side of the metal infrastructure," said Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin, D-Edison.

"You're not supposed to have holes in your beams," added Senate President Steve Sweeney, D-West Deptford. "That means it's not safe."

Sweeney said the money is needed not for improvements, but simply to maintain bridges and roads. He added that increasing New Jersey's low gas taxes is one way the governor could put money into the trust fund.

Assemblyman Peter Barnes, D-Edison, said it's Christie's responsibility to tackle the issue.

"Right now, he hasn't come up with any ideas," Barnes said.
