NJ Appeals Court OKs New Charter School Rules

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A New Jersey appeals court has ruled that the state Board of Education has the authority to change charter school rules to make it easier for existing charters to open new satellite campuses.

The ruling was issued Wednesday.

The Education Law Center and a group called Save Our Schools sued over the 2012 regulations, contending that the changes to speed approval of new campuses were so big that they would require legislative approval.

The groups said the regulation could result in approvals for new charter schools that have not gone through the rigorous application process generally required of new charters.

The unanimous three-judge panel says the state can make expansions easier for charters, adding that charters still need permission to move into new school districts.
