Newtown Board of Education rejects proposed book ban in high school library
NEWTOWN, Conn. -- After months of debate, the school board in Newtown, Connecticut, rejected a proposed ban on two books in the Newtown High School library.
The Newtown School Board unanimously voted against banning the books "Flamer" by Mike Curato and "Blankets" by Craig Thompson. Both are graphic novels that involve sexuality and gender identity.
The Connecticut Library Association director says "Blankets" has never been checked out since it was released back in 2006 and "Flamer" has been checked out once at Newtown High School.
"Books like these offer hope. They offer a path forward, a way to live when it seems impossible. We have these books, and we will not let them be taken away from us," Class President Kate Shirk said.
The board says school administrators will have to develop a plan to address individual parent concerns.
