N.Y. community grappling with 11-year-old's shooting death

A 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of a younger child in Newburgh, New York, police said Friday.

The teenager faces a second-degree murder charge after the 11-year-old boy was killed inside a home on North Miller Street near South Street.

It remains unclear exactly how the tragedy occurred Thursday morning, but police said officers recovered a firearm and that the teen was taken into custody within 12 hours of the incident.

"Three juveniles of interest were identified and quickly located by police," Newburgh officials said.

Police have not released either child's name, but said they are not relatives.

Community grappling with boy's sudden death

Neighbors and strangers came together Friday and lit candles at a memorial outside the home where the boy was found dead from a gunshot wound.

"I'm heartbroken. My community is heartbroken. We're talking about kids," Newburgh resident Tamie Hollins said.

"A lot of things came through my head. I wanted to go to school and pick up my child. It was horrible," resident Melanie Gonzalez said.

Glenn Pugh, who owns a coffee shop down the street from the house, said the boy who was killed was a regular customer.

"It broke me. I was inconsolable ... Who would want to hurt an 11-year-old?" Pugh said. "He was the sweetest kid you'd ever want to meet. I know it's cliché to say that he was a good kid, but he was a great kid. Very, very well-mannered. Very well spoken."

"We want this situation investigated. We want to know what really happened," Hollins said.

Newburgh is located in Orange County, directly across the Hudson River from Beacon.
