"They blocked it off as soon as we came right here. Then, we tried to go to Terminal B and walk across. They blocked us off down there too, as well," traveler Tameerah Jackson, of Newark, said.
Police said the situation started when officers found an unattended brown shopping bag near a trash can. Inside, they discovered a pressure cooker.
The Essex County bomb squad responded and the device was cleared. Police now plan to review surveillance video to identify who left the package.
Authorities said passengers should expect residual delays.
Terminal A is the regional terminal for United Airlines, and Level 3 is the check-in area, CBS News reports.
