Newark Robbery Suspect Recaptured After Escaping Police Custody

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man who escaped police custody was later captured by Newark officers, authorities said Thursday.

Michael Majette, 40, was recaptured around midnight Wednesday night, authorities told NJ.com. Majette was taken back into custody without incident.

Majette escaped police Wednesday while receiving treatment for injuries at University Hospital in Newark. His escape marked the third from the hospital in the past six months.

He faces robbery and gun-related charges. Officials say he was transported to the hospital after reporting knee pain. His handcuffs were removed during treatment.

Officials said on Wednesday the two police officers who were guarding Majette at the time have been suspended without pay.

Union officials called the suspensions ``disappointing'' and said both officers followed procedure.

It's unclear whether Majette has an attorney.
