Authorities: Man Shoots Himself In Hourslong Newark Standoff

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark authorities say a nearly six-hour standoff at a city apartment ended when a man shot himself in the abdomen.

The standoff at the Mount Prospect Avenue residence between the man and police started around 9 p.m. Saturday, when the 39-year-old man and a woman apparently were involved in a domestic dispute. The woman left the apartment, but the man barricaded himself inside and allegedly said he would shoot himself or anyone who tried to enter.

The man shot himself around 2:45 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to a University Hospital and was listed in stable condition, but further details on his injuries were not disclosed.

No charges have been filed in the incident, which remains under investigation. The man's name was not released.

Authorities say the incident was sparked by "recent ongoing family problems." They say the man will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
