Man Shot Dead In Newark, Police Fire Weapons In Pursuit Afterward

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- One man was killed and another was wounded in at least two shootings Newark late Wednesday afternoon, and police officers fired their weapons as they tried to apprehend the suspects.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, a stray bullet from the shooting went through an apartment window.

A shattered windowpane showed the path of the stray bullet. The family who lives in the apartment was home when the bullet broke through their window, pierced through the wall and into a second room, hit another wall, and fell onto the couch.

The family does not speak English, so a neighbor explained what happened.

"The bullet was so high that I guess it just, I guess it missed everybody, so thank God," said neighbor Natasha Santana. "There was infants and everything, so everybody's fine."

It all took place just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. An unidentified man was shot dead by unknown assailants at Bloomfield Avenue and Garside Street.

Chopper 2 was over the area shortly after, as squad cars and investigators flooded the surrounding streets.

The Essex County Prosecutor's office said Newark police tried to go after the suspects involved and even fired their own weapons. It was unclear whether the officers shot anyone on scene.

The investigation closed down several streets – including Kearny Street where Illya Dixon lives. He stood on the corner for hours with groceries, including cupcakes he had bought for a special occasion.

"It's kind of disappointing -- it's my daughters 18th birthday. It's my stepdaughters 18th birthday," he said. "I just wish they would just come and escort me down to my house, especially with all my groceries out here."

Kearny Street later reopened and Dixon was able to get to his home.

The identity of the man who was killed was being withheld late Wednesday evening pending family notification.

Police said no one was in custody in the shooting.

At 11 p.m., Newark police were rushing to the scene of yet another shooting. A man was reportedly shot in the neck and left in serious condition at Bloomfield and Mount Prospect avenues.
