NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A 12-year-old boy was released from the hospital Saturday after he was shot in Newark.

It happened on 17th Avenue just before 10 p.m. Friday.

A bullet flew through a window into the boy's home and hit him, according to Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, who called the incident "outrageous."

The boy was rushed to University Hospital where he was treated for injuries and is expected to be OK.

"He is very lucky to be alive," Ambrose said in a statement.

No arrests have been made, but Ambrose said they "recovered the vehicle involved, unoccupied."

The shooting is under investigation and Ambrose said, "detectives are actively following leads."
