Police: Newark Hostage Situation Ends With 1 Arrest, No Injuries

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark police captured an armed suspect Saturday who they said was holding five people hostage inside an apartment.

Yucef Shabazz Rogers was arrested shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday when city SWAT officers entered the unit at the South Street building and used pepper spray to subdue him. An assault rifle and a loaded 9 mm gun were recovered at the scene, police said.

Police had responded to the apartment around 2:45 a.m. Authorities said a four-hour standoff ensued before officers entered the unit.

The hostages were three adult females, including Rogers' girlfriend, along with a man and a 14-year-old boy, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which authorities said was "domestic related.'' Police said their investigation found that Rogers had fired the assault weapon before officers arrived.

Police said he faces numerous charges including possession of the assault weapon and possession of the weapon for unlawful purposes.
